LES MISÉRABLES, popularly referred to as Les Mis or Les Miz, is based on the novel of the same name by French poet and playwright Victor Hugo.
Set in early 19th-century France, the plot follows the stories of many characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. The ensemble includes a range of characters, from student revolutionaries to factory workers, who join the lead characters and have a substantial role in bringing this story to life.
The music, composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg, with lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, includes an English-language libretto by Herbert Kretzmer. The musical first opened in 1985 at the Barbican Centre in London. It is the second longest-running musical in the world after THE FANTASTIKS, the longest-running show in the West End, London, and the fifth longest-running show in Broadway history, opening there in 1987.
